VW Bus (Samba)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term Samba in VW circles refers to a specific model of the Type 2 bus which was manufactured with the highest trim level available. A Samba is a Standard microbus with additions that include trim strips along the beltline and a dash clock. They were marketed for touring the Alps, as they had small skylight windows embedded into the vehicle roof to add viewing windows. Samba buses began production in 1951 and were all fitted with a large Golde sunroof as standard.
The Volkswagen Type 2 (also officially known as Transporter or informally as Bus) was the second automotive line introduced by German automaker Volkswagen. It was a panel van introduced in 1950, initially based on Volkswagen's first model, the Type 1, the economy car also known as the "Beetle".
As one of the forerunners of the modern cargo and passenger van, The Type 2 gave rise to competitors in the United States and Europe, including the Ford Econoline, Dodge A100, and the Corvair 95 Corvan, the latter adopting the Type 2's rear-engine configuration. As of January 2010[update], updated versions of the Type 2 are produced for international markets, as a passenger van, cargo van, and as a pickup truck. It is also unofficially known as a "microbus", "minibus", "kombi" or "hippie van," the latter due to its popularity with the 1960s/70s counterculture movement.
