X-Ray Specs were invented by Harold von Braunhut, better known for his other invention, the Amazing Sea-Monkeys. A previous product called the Wonder Tube worked in a similar way. Instead of glasses, the device was in the form of a small telescope.

The name of this product was the inspiration for the naming of UK punk band The X-Ray Spex.
